What is a REMS Scan?
REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) is a non-invasive ultrasound technology used to assess bone density and bone quality.
The scan provides a detailed picture of your bone health and can help identify early signs of bone loss, including conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Unlike traditional bone density scans, REMS uses ultrasound rather than radiation, making it a safe and comfortable option for assessing bone health.
The scan is quick, painless and provides immediate results, allowing you to understand your bone health and discuss the next steps with your clinician.
What Does a REMS Scan Do?
A REMS scan measures several important indicators of bone health, including:
-
T-score – compares your bone density with that of a healthy young adult
-
Z-score – compares your bone density with people of the same age, sex and ethnicity
-
Fragility Score – evaluates the structural quality of bone and the potential risk of fractures
Together, these measurements provide a comprehensive view of your bone strength and overall bone health.
Understanding these values can help identify early changes in bone density and allow appropriate steps to be taken to support long-term bone health.
A REMS scan may be helpful for people who:
-
Want to assess their bone health
-
May be at risk of osteoporosis
-
Have experienced unexplained fractures
-
Are concerned about bone density due to age, menopause or family history.
Early detection of bone loss allows clinicians to provide appropriate guidance, monitoring or treatment where necessary
How Does a REMS Scan Work?
REMS technology uses safe ultrasound waves to analyse bone structure and density.
During the scan, a handheld probe is placed gently on the skin, typically over the hip and spine. The device analyses the reflected ultrasound signals to assess both bone density and bone quality.
The scan takes only a few minutes and is completely painless.
Results are available almost immediately and include measurements such as T-scores, Z-scores and the Fragility Score, helping your clinician build a clearer picture of your bone health and risk factors.
This information can then be used to guide appropriate lifestyle advice, monitoring or treatment options where needed.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your private REMS scan will take place in the clinic and usually takes a few minutes. The scan is comfortable and does not require any preparation.
Once completed, your results will be reviewed with you and explained clearly so you understand what they mean for your bone health.
If necessary, we can discuss the most appropriate next steps to help support and maintain healthy bones.
